Indigenous Gender-Based Violence Action Plan Engagement (2023)

The Gender-Based Violence Action Plan is an initiative by the provincial government to combat gender-based violence (GBV), which disproportionately affects Indigenous women, girls, 2SLGBTQQIA+ people, trans people, immigrants, people of colour, people living in poverty, and people with disabilities. A whole-of-government approach is needed to address this complex issue, and the Action Plan will complement numerous other cross-government mandate commitments. The Action Plan is an important component of the Province's commitment to reconciliation and implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and B.C.’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.

A round of engagements was conducted in 2022 with GBV advocates, Indigenous leadership, organizations, service providers, and other key partners. However, it was heard loud and clear that an Indigenous-specific engagement was needed to continue this work meaningfully. Naqsmist is hosting eight in-person engagements and three virtual engagements. The in-person engagements are being hosted throughout B.C. by regional Cultivating Safe Spaces facilitators, with each facilitator hosting two engagements. Elaine Alec will facilitate the three virtual engagements as an option for anyone who cannot attend an in-person session and will be done in a virtual circle setting. A Final Report will be produced from information shared at the engagements to help inform the GBV Action Plan.
